Complete Moving Checklist
A step-by-step timeline from 8 weeks before your move through move-in day. Use this checklist to stay organized and make your Omaha move as smooth as possible.
8 Weeks Before Your Move
Research moving companies and request estimates from at least three
Set your moving budget and identify potential cost savings
Start decluttering — donate, sell, or discard items you no longer need
Create a moving binder or folder for estimates, receipts, and important documents
If renting, notify your landlord of your move-out date
If selling your home, coordinate your closing timeline with your move
Begin collecting free boxes from local stores or purchase moving supplies
6 Weeks Before Your Move
Book your moving company — availability fills fast during peak season (May-September)
Notify your employer if relocating for work and confirm any relocation benefits
Start packing non-essential items: seasonal decorations, guest room, storage areas
Arrange school transfers if you have children changing districts
Schedule disconnection of utilities at your current home
Schedule connection of utilities at your new home (electricity, gas, water, internet)
Update your address with the USPS, banks, insurance, and subscriptions
4 Weeks Before Your Move
Continue packing room by room — label every box with contents and destination room
Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting (TV wiring, computer cables)
Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day
Confirm parking availability and elevator reservations at both locations
Transfer medical records, prescriptions, and veterinary records if changing providers
Return borrowed items and collect anything you have lent out
Use up pantry items and perishable food to reduce what needs to be moved
2 Weeks Before Your Move
Confirm your moving date and arrival time with your movers
Pack an essentials box: medications, phone chargers, toiletries, snacks, water, change of clothes
Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer
Arrange for valuable items (jewelry, important documents, medications) to travel with you personally
Back up all computer files to an external drive or cloud storage
Plan the layout of your new home so movers know where to place furniture
Dispose of hazardous materials that movers cannot transport (propane, paint, gasoline, fireworks)
Moving Day
Wake up early and do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and storage area
Strip beds and pack remaining linens
Meet the moving crew, walk them through the home, and point out fragile or special items
Keep your essentials box and valuables in your car — not on the moving truck
Clear pathways and doorways for safe furniture navigation
Check that utilities are active at your new home before the crew arrives for delivery
Do a final walkthrough of the old home including attic, basement, garage, and outdoor storage
At the new home, direct the crew on furniture placement — it is easier now than later
Inspect your belongings as they are unloaded and note any concerns to the crew lead
After Your Move
Unpack essentials first: kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms
Check that all utilities are working and set up internet service
Update your driver's license and vehicle registration with your new address
Register to vote at your new address
Introduce yourself to neighbors and explore your new neighborhood
Locate the nearest hospital, pharmacy, grocery store, and gas station
Verify all boxes and items were delivered and report any missing items promptly
